Buddhist Attractions
- Nandangarh Stupa : This small village is best known for its
huge stupa called nandangarh which is 26 metre high and is built of
bricks. The stupa, it is believed, enshrines the ashes of Lord Buddha.
- Ashokan Pillar : This pillar is located barely half a
kilometre from the village and rises to a height of 32 feet. The
diametre at base is 35.5 inches while at the top is 26.21 inches. The
pillar is a sandstone structure the top of which is shaped like a bell.
A circular abacus, decorated with a row of Brahmi geese packing their
food, holds the statue of a lion. The pillar, when compared with that of
Bakhra and Areraj, is much thinner, lighter, elegant as well as
pleasing. Iinscribed in the pillar is the edict of Ashoka in clear and
beautiful characters.

- Lauriya Areraj : Lauriya Areraj is located some 31 km north
west of Motihari and is known for a stone column that was erected by
Ashoka in 249 BC. The stone pillar towers to a height of 11.5 metres and
was carved out of a single piece of polished sandstone. Inscribed on the
pillar are six edicts of emperor Ashoka.
- Kesariya : Kesariya is
known for being the place where Lord Buddha delivered His famous Kalama
Sutta. Worthseeing here is a stupa that stands reminder to the incident
when Lord Buddha urged a number of His followers to go back to their
home and not follow Him to Kushinara.
