When Buddhism made entry into China, along came the two kinds of Indian Buddhist buildings - the caves and the temples. Architects of that era merged the Indian style of temple architecture with traditional Chinese architecture style to create a new style of temple buildings.

Chinese Buddhist temple, from the time they were introduced into the country, have been known by different names like Ci or Lanruo, Jialan, Jingshe and Si. The last one, 'Si' was a term which was usually used for palaces or mansions of high officials in China's early Qin Dynasty and its use for Buddhist temples was meant to show reverence.
